The Spring Wings Bird Festival
One of Fallons brightest events is the Spring Wings Bird Festival held the second weekend in May. The festival, this year May 10-12, 2002, is a celebration of the spring migration through the Lahontan Valley. It is the events mission to encourage growth of this community event and promote interest and awareness of the importance of these unique wetlands.
The Lahontan Valley wetlands are recognized as some of the most significant in the western United States. They have been designated as a site of international importance by the Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network, as well as being considered a "Globally Important Bird Area" by the American Bird Conservancy.
Festival coordinator Janet Schmidt summed up the spirit
behind the festival in this way:
The event includes workshops, seminars, guest speakers, an art show, vendors, kids activities, and most importantly, field trips to various wetlands for birding.
