IN AMERICA

Not too long ago, Life Magazine dubbed U.S.
Highway 50 "The Loneliest
Road in America." The magazine stated that one needs "survival
skill" to drive the route. Well, we beg to differ.
Highway 50, which parallels the historic Pony Express Trail, cuts through
some of the most scenic high desert in the country, and isn't lonely
at all. In fact, it's one of the best ways to experience Nevada, providing
a fascinating scenic and historic corridor filled with interesting people
and places. This is Pony Express Territory, Nevada.
As a tongue-in-cheek promotion, communities
along the highway--including Fallon--provide a "Highway 50 Survival Kit" containing useful
information about attractions and services. Pick one up at the Fallon
Convention Center or any number of Fallon businesses displaying the "I
Survived Highway 50" sign.
Have the validation map included in your kit
stamped in the communities on the "loneliest road" and mail it back to the Nevada Commission
On Tourism, 401 N. Carson St., Carson City, NV 89701 and they'll send
you an "I Survived Highway 50" sticker, a very special thank
you and an invitation to visit again soon. Or give them a call at 1-800-237-0774
and visit them on the web at www.travelnevada.com.
So, even if it does get a little remote, survival skills are a good
thing, right?
