Sand Mountain

Name: Sand Mountain or "Singing" Sand Mountain. A "seif" dune named from the Arabic word "sayf" meaning sword.

Location: 25 miles east of Fallon, Nevada on U.S. Highway 50.

Size: 600 feet high and 2.5 miles long.

Discovered: Exact date unknown. The first written description was in 1883. It was first surveyed in 1860, however.

Fun Fact: One of the residents of Sand Mountain is the Sand Mountain blue butterfly which feeds on buckwheat.

Visitors: Over 35,000 people visit the mountain each year.
