Lahontan State Recreation area is located just 17 miles west of Fallon. It is one of the most popular recreation areas in Nevada. It is 17 miles long with over 70 miles of shoreline and 10,000 acres of water surface when full. Though there is only one developed campground at Lahontan (Silver Springs Beach #7), regulars know the key to having a good time is good planning, and bringing their own "rock to sit on" and shade to cover it.

There are also two, day-use picnicking areas with modern rest rooms, tables and grills, easily accessible to the handicapped. One is Silver Springs Beach #7 and the other is directly across from Lahontan Dam. Of course, boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing are extremely popular activities at Lahontan as well. The two boat launching areas are located at the North Shore Marina on the dam side of the reservoir and the Silver Springs Beach.

Fishing at Lahontan is open all year. It is second only to Lake Mead in popularity with over 25,000 anglers a year trying their luck. State records for Channel Catfish, White Crappie, and White Bass have been taken by Lahontan fishermen. In addition to these fish, Walleye and Largemouth Bass are also plentiful.

Sunny skies are the rule at Lahontan with daytime temperatures in the 90's during the summer. However, nights may be very cool with the spread between day and night temperatures often fluctuating over 50 degrees. In addition, summer thunderstorms accompanied by high winds can come on quickly. Seasoned boaters know to keep their eye on the horizon for telltale signs of stormy weather such as puffy clouds turning black along with gusty winds.

Hunting is also allowed during established seasons.
