State Historic Markers in Churchill County
The number before each entry corresponds to the number
each site is assigned by the state. These are state historical markers
you would see on Highway 50 traveling east.
215. Lahontan Dam. Completed in 1915 as part of the Newlands
Project, turning the Lahontan Valley into one of the most productive
farming and ranching areas in Nevada. (Off Hwy 50 at approach to the
dam.)
19. Ragtown. A welcome resting station for those just
crossing the treacherous 40-Mile Desert. (Hwy 95 Alternate, 1 mile
east of junction with Hwy 50.)
161. Churchill County Courthouse. Built in 1903, it is
listed on the National Register of historic places. (Corner of Williams
Ave. and Maine St. in Fallon.)
216. Stillwater. This townsite is what remains of Churchill
County's second county seat. (Route 166 at Stillwater, 16 miles east
of Fallon on Hwy 50.)
27. Grimes Point. One of the largest and most accessible
petroglyph sites in northern Nevada. (Hwy 50 eleven miles east of Fallon.)
10. Sand Mountain. This giant sand dune is situated near
Sand Springs Pony Express station, salt flats, the first transcontinental
telegraph and other historic roadways. (Hwy 50 twenty five miles east
of Fallon.)
202. Fairview. Historic mining camp--1905-1917. (Hwy
50 six miles east of Frenchman.)
201. Wonder. Historic mining camp--1906-1919. (Hwy 50
8 miles east of Frenchman.)
83. Rock Creek/Cold Springs. An important
stage stop on Butterfield, Wells, Fargo & Company historic stage
line. (Hwy 50 in Edwards Creek Valley.)
111. Edwards Creek Valley. Used by prehistoric inhabitants
and later by European settlers. (Hwy 50, 33 miles east of Austin.)
